Ubuntu Linux Turns 20

On October 20, 2004, the first version of the Ubuntu operating system was released. Developed by Mark Shuttleworth, a South African millionaire who had previously worked on the Debian project, Ubuntu aimed to create a user-friendly desktop distribution with a predictable development cycle. Several developers from Debian were also involved in the project, with some still contributing to both Debian and Ubuntu.

Ubuntu 4.10, also known as “Warty Warthog,” included GNOME 2.8, Firefox 0.9, and OpenOffice.org 1.1.2. This version of Ubuntu can still be downloaded for those interested in seeing how the system looked two decades ago.
