Intel and AMD have recently announced the creation of consultative groups focused on developing innovation in the X86 ecosystem. The groups include notable participants such as Linus Torvalds, the creator of the Linux nucleus, and Tim Sweeney, the founder of EPIC Games and a key developer of the Unreal Engine game engine. Other members of the group represent companies such as Broadcom, Dell, Google, Hewlett Packard, Lenovo, Meta, Microsoft, Oracle, and Red Hat.
One of the main goals of this initiative is to collaborate on ensuring compatibility between platforms, simplifying software development for X86 systems, and understanding developers’ needs for architecture expansion. The overarching objective is to support the continuous advancement of the X86 Architecture, which is in high demand among both developers and consumers.
By bringing together industry leaders, the group aims to address the interests of both hardware manufacturers and software developers, shaping the future architecture and providing developers with a more cohesive set of instructions and architectural interfaces. The group’s focus extends to various areas of application, including data processing centers, client systems, cloud services, embedded devices, machine learning solutions, and 3D graphics.
The anticipated outcomes of this collaboration include improved software and hardware compatibility, simplified architecture guidelines, standardized products from Intel and AMD, and more efficient integration of new hardware into operating systems, frameworks, and applications.
