MoneyGram has confirmed that due to the cyber attacks in September, customers’ personal information and transaction details were compromised. The incident took place on September 20, leading to the company’s website and mobile application being non-functional for approximately a week.
Currently, the investigation into the breach is in its early stages, with the exact number of affected users yet to be determined by the company.
During the attack, hackers were able to access and steal names, phone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth, and in some cases, social security numbers (SSN) and copies of state documents like driver’s licenses. Additionally, other personal data such as utility bills and bank account numbers were also compromised. The types of data stolen varied from individual to individual.
Furthermore, information regarding transactions, including dates and amounts, was obtained by the hackers. A small number of users had their data related to investigations, such as those involving fraudulent activities, exposed as well. MoneyGram has already informed regulators in the UK about the data breach.
