FFMPEG 7.1 Multimedia Package Released

After six months of development FFMPEG 7.1 is now available. This multimedia package includes a set of applications and a collection of libraries for operations on various multimedia formats, such as recording, transformation, and decoding of sound and video formats. The package is written in the language of si and spreads under licenses LGPL and GPL.

Among the changes in ffmpeg 7.1:

  • Encoders in H.264 and H.265 formats have been added, using graphic acceleration of video coding explosions. These encoders, based on Vulkan, offer capabilities similar to previously available encoders using VAAPI.
  • The Xhe-AAC sound encoding format has been included, known for its support of a wide range of bitrates, high compression, playback with constant volume, dynamic range control, and metadata support. The format is used in Netflix streaming and Digital Radio Mondiale broadcasting.
  • A stable decoder implementation for the VVC format, also known as H.266, has been added. This format supports various screen resolutions, HDR, and 360-degree panoramic video. Accelerated decoding for VVC using Intel QSV is now possible.
  • An encoder for VVC has been added, implemented through the use of the libvvenc library.
  • The ability to decode videos in mv-hevc format, used in virtual reality headsets and smartphones for transmission of stereoscopic video, has been added.
  • The video coding standard LCEVC, implemented using the LCEVCDEC external library, has been introduced. LCEVC adds an additional layer with
