The developers behind the anonymous network Tor and the distribution Tails have announced a merger of their projects. This collaboration will see the further development of the Tails distribution being carried out as part of the Tor project. The merger aims to streamline joint work, increase efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance capabilities in combating digital threats.
Tails, short for The Amnesic Incognito Live System, is built on the DEBIAN package base and comes equipped with the GNOME desktop. It is designed for anonymous browsing on the internet, blocking all connections except those through the Tor network.
By joining forces with a larger organization that shares the same ideals and objectives, the team of Tails developers can now focus on enhancing the distribution without having to divert attention to routine organizational and infrastructure issues. The collaboration between the two projects has been strong since 2015, and the decision to merge was a natural progression as Tails had outgrown its initial organizational structure.
