Proxmox Releases Proxmox Backup Server 3.3 for Efficient Virtual Environment Backup and Recovery
Proxmox, a renowned developer of products such as Proxmox Virtual Environment and Proxmox Mail Gateway, has recently announced the release of the distribution Proxmox Backup Server 3.3. This release is a comprehensive solution designed for backup copying and recovery of virtual environments, containers, and server contents. The installation ISO-image is available for free download, and the components specific to the distribution are open under the AGPLV3 license. Users can access both paid enterprise repositories and two free repositories for updates, depending on the level of update stabilization required.
The system architecture of this distribution is based on the DEBIAN and OpenZFS package base. The software stack for managing the backup is developed in RUST and supports incremental backups, deduplication, compression using ZSTD, and encryption of backup copies. Proxmox Backup Server operates on a client-server architecture, allowing it to be used for local backups as well as a centralized server for backup data from various hosts. Additionally, the system offers quick selective restoration modes and data synchronization between servers.
For seamless integration with the Proxmox VE platform, Proxmox Backup Server facilitates backup copying of virtual machines and containers. Data recovery and backup management are handled through a user-friendly web interface, with the provision for different levels of access for users. Security is a top priority, with all traffic encrypted using AES-256 in GCM mode and backup copies transmitted already encrypted using asymmetric encryption with open keys to prevent data leakage. The integrity of backups is verified using Hashee’s.
In the newest release of Proxmox Backup Server 3.3, updates include synchronization with the Debian 12.8 package base and an upgrade to the Linux kernel version 6.8.12, with the option of a kernel package of version 6.11 available. The ZFS file system implementation is also updated to Openzfs 2.2.6, enhancing the overall performance and reliability of the backup server.
