India Blocks 6.7M SIM Cards in Cyber Crackdown

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of India reported that by November 15 this year, approximately 6.7 million SIM cards and 1.3 million IMEI identifiers linked to cybercrimes have been blocked. This proactive measure aims to crack down on criminal activities involving these communication devices.

To tackle such offenses, the central government has collaborated with communication operators to develop a system capable of identifying and blocking international calls that appear to be local numbers. These calls are frequently utilized in fraudulent activities such as fake arrests, “fedex fraud,” and impersonating officials from governmental agencies or law enforcement.

Communication operators have been instructed to block any suspicious calls that fall under this category, as part of the ongoing efforts to combat cybercrimes in India.

In addition to these initiatives, the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System was launched in 2021 as part of the I4C initiative. This system enables swift resolution of financial fraud cases and helps in preventing unauthorized fund deductions. Since its inception, the system has successfully safeguarded more than 3,431 Rupe Rupe, after processing over 9.9 million complaints related to cyber fraud incidents.
