Finland Restores Internet After Cable Disruption

Damage to two Internet cables on the border of Finland and Sweden, which became known on Monday, is not connected with criminal actions. According to Finnish police, damage arose as a result of earthwork.

The Finnish Transport and Communication Directorate Traficom also confirmed that cable damage occurred as a result of construction work.

The incident affected about thousand private users and companies depending on the services of numbers reduces. According to Global Connect providing communication in northern Europe cables were damaged at two places in south Finland: one damage occurred in the morning, the other in the afternoon.

On Tuesday night, specialists restored the first cable, which allowed the Internet to resume for 95% of customers. The second cable was repaired by noon of the same day, after which access to the Internet was completely restored.

According to the representative of Global Connect, such cable damage occurs once every few months, however, the case of simultaneous damage to the two cables in one region is a rarity.

Against the backdrop of the power of Finland and the company, the company began to verify the circumstances. However, by Tuesday evening, the police said that there was no reason to initiate a criminal case, since the damage was caused exclusively by excavation work.

The incident occurred a few weeks after similar events at the bottom of the Baltic Sea, when the cables connecting Finland with Germany and Lithuania with Sweden were damaged. Then the Swedish, Finnish and German authorities initiated an investigation, considering the possibility of sabotage. Last week, Sweden officially turned to China with a request to assist in clarifying the circumstances of the damage, since in the area of ​​the incident there was a ship under the Chinese flag.
