Barry Kauler, the founder of the Puppy Linux project, recently released Distribution EasyOS 6.5. This new distribution combines the technology of Puppy Linux with container insulation to launch system components. The distribution control is managed through a set of graphic configurators developed by the project. The size of the loading image is 950 Mb, and it is available for download.
The features of EasyOS distribution include:
- Each application and the desktop can be launched in separate containers using Easy Containers for isolation.
- Root privileges are used by default with a discharge of privileges when starting each application, as EasyOS is a Live system of one user.
- The distribution is installed in a separate subcatalog and can coexist with other data on the drive.
- Conserving of individual subcatals like /Home is supported.
- Meta-packages in SFS format can be installed, which are mounted images with SquashFS, similar to AppImages, Snaps, and Flatpak formats.
- The system is updated in atomic mode and supports rollback of changes after updates.
- Launch mode from RAM is available, where the system is copied into memory during boot and works without accessing discs.
- Tools from Woofq and initial texts of packages from the OpenEmbedded project are used for distribution assembly.
- The desktop is based on the JWM window manager and the ROX file manager.
- The distribution includes applications like Firefox, LibreOffice, Scribus, GIMP, and many others for various tasks.
- For file exchange and printer access, EasyOS offers its own application called Easyshare.
