Libreboot 20241206 Firmware Released Free

The release of free loading firmware Libreboot 20241206 has been announced, marking a stable output focused on improving the functionality added in experimental versions. This project is an extension of the finished assembly of Coreboot, which serves as a replacement for proprietary firmware such as UEFI and BIOS. These firmware are responsible for initializing CPU, memory, peripheral devices, and other components in a system, while minimizing binary inserts.

Libreboot aims to create a systemic environment that reduces reliance on proprietary software not only at the operating system level, but also at the firmware level that handles system booting. By simplifying the use of Coreboot for end users, Libreboot provides a ready-made distribution that can be easily utilized by users without specialized skills.

The latest version of Libreboot adds support for devices such as Lenovo ThinkPad T480, Lenovo ThinkPad T480S, Dell Optiplex 780 USFF, and Dell Optiplex 780 MT. Furthermore, there have been improvements in the support for the PC Dell Optiplex 3050 Micro. Utility deguard has been involved to disconnect Boot Guard on Intel systems like Skylake, Kaby Lake, and Coffee Lake with Intel Mev11. Additionally, u-boot has been updated to version 2024.10 for ARM64 systems, and Seabios has been synchronized with the main project’s repository as of October 17.
