Sonic Fear: Infrasonic Waves Manipulate Emotions

Back in 2003, British scientists from the National Physical Laboratory conducted a study to investigate the effects of infrasound on individuals. Infrasound refers to low-frequency sounds that are beyond the range of human audibility, but are believed to have potential psychological effects. The experiment took place in London during a concert where infrasound was introduced alongside regular music, without the participants’ knowledge.

The objective of the research was to determine whether infrasound could elicit unusual emotional responses. There is a belief that these low-frequency sounds are utilized in environments like church music, particularly in organ concerts, to create a sense of awe and evoke intense emotions. Additionally, there are theories suggesting that infrasound may be present in locations associated with “hauntings,” causing feelings of unease in individuals.

One particular incident detailed in a study involved laboratory personnel in Coventry experiencing symptoms such as depression, trembling, and even seeing “figures” in their peripheral vision. Subsequent investigation revealed that these sensations were caused by infrasound emitted by a new ventilation system. Once the system was turned off, all the reported symptoms disappeared.

During the London concert, a 17.5 Hz frequency sound was generated using a 7-meter pipe, playing intermittently without prior disclosure to the audience. Approximately 22% of the attendees reported experiencing unusual sensations, including feelings of sadness, chills, anxiety, and fear.

The results of the experiment confirmed that low-frequency sounds have the potential to induce psychological reactions, even when individuals are unaware of their presence. Researchers also suggested that such effects could contribute to the development of ghost stories in locations where infrasound is present.

Subsequent studies, including experiments involving the creation of “ghost rooms,” supported the idea that infrasound could evoke sensations akin to paranormal experiences. However, it is essential to note that while infrasound may explain some occurrences of “hauntings,” other cases may involve deceptive practices, carbon monoxide exposure, or unexplained phenomena.
