The distribution Elementary OS 8 has been released, offering a fast and privacy-focused alternative to Windows and MacOS. The main focus of the project is on quality design that emphasizes simplicity, minimal resource consumption, and high speed. Users can experience a unique desktop environment with Pantheon’s desktop. An ISO-image (3.2 GB) is available for download for free on the project’s website.
Elementary OS utilizes GTK3, VALA language, and Granite framework for its components. The distribution is built on the foundation of Ubuntu project’s achievements and is compatible with Ubuntu 24.04 at the package and repository level. Applications within Elementary OS 8.x are packaged using the Flatpak format and can be installed via the Appsenter. The graphic environment features the Pantheon shell, which includes components such as Gala window manager, Wingpanel top panel, Slingshot launcher, and Switchboard control panel.
Key innovations in Elementary OS 8 include the introduction of two session options upon login – Classic and Secure. The new Secure session enables the Wayland Protocol by default and activates a permission request system for applications in Flatpak format. Users have to confirm access to extended functions like taking screenshots, changing desktop backgrounds, and accessing location data. The environment also includes applications like Pantheon Terminal, Pantheon Files, Code text editor, Music player, Photo manager, and Mail client.
- In the Secure session, users are required to confirm access to certain functions like taking screenshots and changing desktop wallpapers. Visit this link for more information.
