Raspersha Razzlekhan’s $4.5B Bitbox Scam Uncovered

Heather “Razzlekhan” Morgan has been sentenced to 1.5 years in prison for her involvement in laundering funds stolen from Bitfinex crypto accounts in 2016. Her husband, Ilya “Dutch” Liechtenstein, who orchestrated the theft of almost 120,000 BTC, had previously received a 5-year prison sentence.

Authorities revealed that the couple managed to launder around 20% of the stolen funds. At the time of their arrest, the US government stated that the criminals attempted to launder $4.5 billion worth of stolen bitcoins, of which $3.6 billion was successfully recovered, marking it as the largest financial recovery in history. Subsequently, nearly $1 billion linked to the Bitfinex hack was also seized.

Morgan and Liechtenstein were apprehended in February 2022. Both individuals agreed to cooperate with American law enforcement agencies.

Despite Morgan’s claims of being unaware of the crime until after its commission, investigations implicated her in actively participating in the laundering of illicit funds. Alleged methods included engaging in shadow market operations, switching between cryptocurrencies, using mixers for anonymous transactions, exchanging assets for gold coins, and legitimizing funds through bank accounts.

During a court hearing, Morgan’s relatives and friends, including those from Dubai and Hong Kong, appealed for leniency, highlighting the defendant’s genuine remorse. The judge acknowledged the support Morgan received from her loved ones and recognized her lesser role in the crime compared to her husband. However, the judge emphasized that the sentencing should serve as a caution for the cryptocurrency industry, which is often exploited for unlawful activities.

Morgan’s defense team advocated for a sentence limited to time already spent under house arrest plus an additional 17 days in prison, citing the tarnished reputation of the defendant, particularly as a result of her persona as the rapper “Razzlekhan.” In contrast, the prosecution underscored Morgan’s active involvement in criminal activities, presenting instances where she personally buried gold coins acquired from stolen goods.

During the proceeding, Morgan broke down in tears, expressing deep regret for her actions. She acknowledged that the repercussions of their crime would haunt her for the rest of her life. Later that day, Morgan
