Google Shifts Chrome OS to Android Platform

Edition of Android Authority received information about Google’s intention to replace the Chrome OS platform with a new implementation built on the basis of the Android platform. The plans to involve individual Android components in Chrome OS, such as the core and system libraries, were reported in June. However, according to the new information, the plans are more global than just involving Android parts in Chrome OS. The new strategy involves complete unification and reservation with recreation of the Chrome OS interface on top of the Android platform.

The reasons cited include the desire to increase competition with the iPad and to use engineering resources more efficiently in order not to divide efforts between two operating systems. While details about the integration plans are not provided, it is assumed that Google will gradually begin to replace the classic Chrome OS by equipping Chromebooks with an interface operating on the Android base. According to unofficial information, the first device to implement this change will be the Pixel Laptop laptop with firmware based on the Android platform. This firmware will include the desktop mode introduced in Android 15.

It is worth noting that the Chrome OS operating system architecture is similar to atomically updated distributions of Linux. It utilizes the Linux core with specific patches, the UPSTART system manager, and assembly tools from Gentoo Linux. Despite being focused on using web applications instead of standard programs, Chrome OS includes a full-fledged multi-window interface, desktop, and taskbar. To run
