Mozilla Faces Scrutiny Over Rutracker Plugins

The Tagansky District Court of Moscow has ruled that Mozilla Corporation has violated the legislation of the Russian Federation by failing to remove the Firefox browser add-ons banned in Russia, such as the Rutracker Add-on, Censor Tracker plugins, and others, despite repeated notifications from Roskomnadzor.

According to the court’s decision, these plugins remained on the pages of Addons.mozilla.org, which were listed in the forbidden register. Some of the add-ons for Firefox mentioned in the case included the Rutracker Add-on, Censor Tracker, and other plugins designed to bypass restrictions.

While one of the plugins was voluntarily deleted by its developer, Mozilla did not remove the specified add-ons within the legally required timeframe, despite receiving a deletion order from Roskomnadzor in June 2024.

The judge determined that Mozilla Corporation’s actions constituted an administrative offense under part 2 of Art. 13.41 of the Administrative Code of the Russian Federation, resulting in an administrative fine for the organization.

Previously, the Tagansky District Court of Moscow had imposed a 3.5 million ruble administrative fine on Mozilla Corporation, known for developing the Mozilla Firefox browser, for its failure to comply with the obligation to delete prohibited information under Russian law.
