After five months of development, the release of the musical player amarok 3.2.0 has been announced. Amarok was very popular during the time of KDE 3 and KDE 4. Following the release of KDE 5, the project fell out of favor, but it has been revived this year and ported to QT5/QT6 and KDE Frameworks 5/6 libraries. The project’s code is written in C++ and is distributed under the GPLv2 license.
Amarok features a three-panel display mode for information (collection, current composition, and playlist), allowing users to navigate their music collection, tags, and individual catalogs. It supports dynamic playlists and quick creation of custom playlists, generates recommendations, statistics, and ratings for popular tracks, and can load songs, covers, and information about compositions from various services. Users can also automate actions through scripting.
In the new version, implementation of Qt 6 and KDE Frameworks 6 has been highlighted. The recommended configuration is to build with Qt5 and KDE Frameworks 5, as working with QT6 is still untested and not all issues have been identified. It is planned that after stabilizing assemblies with QT6 next year, a branch for Amarok 4.0 will be formed.
Other changes in this version include a default applet with contextual information about the current track and support for connecting to current versions (5.0+) of streaming servers like ampache. Additionally, the new version allows users to filter the contents of their music collection by empty or missing tags.
