Matthew Garrett (Matthew Garrett), the developer of the Linux nucleus, explained the essence of the work of modern technical means of copyright protection (DRM) used by video services. Garrett was prompted by the prejudices that connect the DRM using crypto processors (TPM, Trusted Platform Module).
The DRM TRAM TRUGE TO THE TPM, among other things, are mentioned in the campaign’s SPO Foundation Defective by Design (“Defective from the box”) directed against DRM, in which states that most large streaming platforms use TPM for decryption of media tests, specifically deriving the decryption of control of control User. As a confirmation of such a thesis, it is indicated that Microsoft insists that only equipment with TPM can operate under Windows 11, and this was done to help companies engaged in streaming broadcasting, in their attempt to ensure the reproduction of content only in a rigidly limited media.
Matthew Garrett does not know what Microsoft is actually guided, demanding TPM in Windows 11, and is not sure that this is justified. At the same time, since his current work is directly related to writing the code using TPM, he believes that the presence of TPM allows you to realize a number of useful security functions and if he had to choose, he would choose a computer with TPM. According to Garrett, the SPO Foundation’s statement is 100% incorrect and he does not know a single streaming platform using TPM. There is a hardware DRM that media companies use to limit users, but it is implemented based on TPM and on the side of the graphic processor.
Three main DRM implementations are available:
- widevine – belongs to Google, used in Android, Chromebook, and some other devices.
- FairPlay – Apple implementation, used for Mac and iOS.
- PlayReady – Microsoft implementation, used in Windows, on some hardware devices of streaming broadcasting, and TVs.
