Debian 13 Installer Alpha Testing Starts

In a recent development, the first alpha-release of the upcoming Debian-“Trixie” has been announced. The Debian 13 release is anticipated to be launched in the summer of 2025.

Some key changes to be expected in this release include:

  • Added architecture support for risc-v (riscv64).
  • Removal of the MIPSEL architecture port from repositories, which was one of the oldest supported ports in Debian, even predating the port for I386 processors.
  • Discontinuation of the assembly of the installer for Armel and i386 architectures (though support for these architectures is still maintained in repositories).
  • Transition to a 64-bit Time_t type for 32-bit architectures to address the issue of The problem of 2038.
  • Redesign of the interface for creating a Root account and adding the initial user.
  • Enhancements to components responsible for drive partitioning, including a new heuristics for automatic section breakdown and selection of optimal section sizes, particularly for small drives.
  • Introduction of a new screensaver and design theme called cratopsian.
