AI Develops Emotional Intelligence for Empathy

LG unveiled a new concept of artificial intelligence called “emotional intelligence” or Affectionate Intelligence, which is aimed at improving interaction with users. The innovation was announced by CEO William Cho at the LG World Premiere event in Las Vegas on January 6, 2025, on the eve of CES 2025.

This technology promises to redefine the traditional idea of AI by positioning “emotional intelligence” as a personal home assistant. The goal of this new concept is to better understand and empathize with users, providing a personalized experience.

The spotlight was on the updated AI agent LG Furon, which is based on LLM models and analyzes data on user preferences. During the demonstration, Furon showcased its capabilities by adjusting the room temperature in the morning after sensing someone was cold at night. It also reminded the user to take their mother for a scheduled medical examination based on the user’s free time in their schedule.

Furon can anticipate user needs such as reminding them of a forgotten thermos with coffee at home or suggesting alternate routes to avoid traffic congestion. It also offers proactive solutions like suggesting online meetings from the car during heavy traffic. At the end of the day, AI analyzes the environment, habits, and interaction history to recommend personalized content.

The concept, as highlighted in Bloomberg, revolves around three key elements: connected devices, AI, and integrated services. These devices serve as the interface between the user and AI. However, the high cost associated with this technology may restrict its accessibility to a limited segment of buyers.
