Gentoo Project Releases 2024 Report

The developers of the Gentoo Linux published a report with a review of the main events and financial indicators for 2024. Among the achievements highlighted:

  • The project’s income for the 2024 fiscal year amounted to $20,800, with 80% coming from individual donations. Operating expenses were $7,900, while $13,300 was used for other costs, resulting in a balance of $105,000 in the bank account. The project also transferred organization SPI (Software in the Public Interest) Asset management in the spring of 2024, resolving legal issues and organizing donations.
  • In the main repository in 2024, 12,3942 changes were made, 2.4% more than in 2023. The number of developers increased from 10,708 to 12,812. In the repository supported by users guru, 7,517 changes were made by 241 participants, compared to 5,045 changes by 158 participants in 2023.
  • A total of 26,123 reports were added to the error tracking system in 2024, with 25,946 problems resolved, showing an improvement from 2013 with 24,795 reports and 22,779 problems resolved.
  • Efforts were made to stabilize the assembly using GCC 14 and prepare for GCC 15 defaulting to the C23 standard. Optimization at the binding stage (LTO) was included in package assembly.
  • Work was done to address the 2038 problem and migrate code in packages to use a 64-bit Time_t type for 32-bit architectures, along with updating profiles to version 23.
