MX Linux 23.5 has been released, a lightweight distribution resulting from collaboration between the communities of Antix and Mepis. This release is based on the Debian package base, with enhancements from the Antix project and packages from its own repository. The distribution system utilizes the sysvinit initialization system and its own system configuration and expansion tools. Users can download 32-bit and 64-bit versions with the XFCE desktop (2.4 GB), a KDE desktop (2.7 GB), and Fluxbox window manager (1.8 GB) from SourceForge.
Key updates in this release include the XFCE desktop environment being updated to version 4.20, synchronization with Debian 12.9 package base, and updated versions of applications. The default initiation system remains Sysvinit, while SystemD can be installed as an option. The Linux kernel is updated to version 6.1.123, with a special assembly including extended hardware support (AHS) delivered with XFCE and kernel 6.12.8 with Liquorix project patches. Additionally, an updated MX Raspberry Pi respin for Raspberry Pi boards with XFCE is available, along with improvements in the package installer interface and third-party repository packages.
Notable new features include warnings about attempting to enable permanent storage when booting from a read-only device, and the addition of additional Fallback-Remissions to the installer for increased reliability. For more information and screenshots, visit screenshots.debian.net.
