Iran Lifts Ban: WhatsApp Access Restored

In Iran, authorities have decided to lift restrictions on popular digital services after more than 27 months. The restrictions were initially implemented in September 2022 during mass protests in the country, leading to the blocking of platforms such as Instagram, Viber, SoundCloud, App Store, Linkedin, and Clash of Clans. Subsequently, in November of the same year, Google services like Firebase and Play Protect were also affected.

The blocking of Google Play had posed significant challenges for users who required access to safe applications, forcing them to resort to unreliable means of bypassing the restrictions. However, after 27 months, the Iranian government has initiated the phased removal of these restrictions, starting with the unlocking of WhatsApp and Google Play as the first step approved by the Supreme Council Cyberspace Council.

Despite this initial move, many Iranians feel that more needs to be done to fulfill promises made by Masuda Cyzeshkin’s deputy regarding the removal of restrictions. The decision highlights the growing importance of digital technologies in developing countries, as they strive to bridge the gap with more advanced nations in this sector.

Former Minister of Communications, Isa Zarepur, revealed that there were three unsuccessful attempts to lift restrictions on Google Play due to lack of support from the majority in the relevant working group. The government has now managed to address concerns and persuade opponents of the restrictions, taking the first step towards normalizing access to digital services within Iran.

While Instagram remains accessible in Iran, platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have been prohibited for use since 2009. Similarly, Tiktok and Telegram are also restricted in the Islamic Republic. META and its products are considered extremist and are banned in the Russian Federation, along with several other social networking platforms.
