Google has announced an update to its Android system, adding protection against unknown Bluetooth trackers. One significant improvement is the automatic notification feature that alerts users when an unfamiliar device is in close proximity, potentially tracking the smartphone owner.
For devices compatible with the Find My Device system, Google has introduced two additional functions to enhance control capabilities. Firstly, users can suspend location data updates for up to 24 hours to prevent unknown trackers from accessing their geodata. Secondly, the “Find nearby” function allows users to locate the tracker that triggered the notification, directing them to its exact location.
Users can find more information about the discovered tracker notification on Android Help. Further details about the new functions are available in the Android reference center.
Bluetooth trackers are small devices that can be attached to various items like keys, wallets, bicycles, or cars for tracking through a smartphone. These trackers rely solely on Bluetooth connectivity and do not have a GPS module. Typically powered by a CR2032 battery, they can operate for up to a year.
Recent research has shown an increasing demand for tracking devices among organized crime groups and infamous criminals. The HAKEA project studied popular trackers like Apple Airtag, Samsung Smart Tag, and Tile, analyzing over 5,000 trackers acquired through thousands of transactions.
