GitHub Down: Unicorn Blocks Developer Repositories

Github faced a major failure that affected the main platform services. Users encountered issues with PULL request implementation, creating and viewing tasks, as well as accessing repositories and commits.

The company quickly reacted to the incident and reported on its official status page that an investigation into the causes of the failure was underway. The message specified that the problem was related to the caching infrastructure, and specialists were already working on resolving it. As a result of the incident, many users received errors stating “We COULDN’T Respond to Your Request in Time” and saw the well-known “unicorn” symbol – indicating server malfunctions on Github.

The failure was confirmed by the Downdetector monitoring service, which registered thousands of complaints from users. The most common issues reported included difficulty accessing the site, connecting to servers, and using Actions – a key function on GitHub.

The company has not yet specified the extent of the consequences of the incident and which regions were most affected. However, the failure has been classified as a “major incident,” indicating a significant problem scale.

Such incidents have occurred previously. For example, in February 2022, a similar failure completely disabled GitHub, rendering the site inaccessible and halting work with communities, cloning, and pull requests. In March of the same year, the platform experienced a series of four consecutive failures due to the main database being overloaded. In May 2023, the platform encountered mass failures again, lasting three days and resulting in connection refusals to the database and authentication issues.

Currently, Github has reported that the failure has been fully resolved. The company continues to monitor the system to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
