Gnome Adopts Adwaita Sans as Default Font

In the code base used to form a spring release Gnome 48, an accepted change transfers the desktop to use the font Adwaita Sans by default, replacing the previously used Cantarell font since 2010. The decision to replace Cantarell was made due to stagnation of development and escort problems.

The new Adwaita Sans font, based on the font Inter, is designed for use in user interfaces, optimized for achieving highly clear symbols of small and medium size (less than 12px) when displayed on computers. Unlike Cantarell, the Inter project has a large community that continues the font development, eliminating shortcomings, implementing new font capabilities, and testing display quality for various languages and screens.

The Adwaita Sans font by default uses the same display for the letter “O” and the numbers “0”, as well as a similar description for the capital letter “I” and the line “L”. This feature is achieved through the setting of the “SS02” mode in the property font-feature-settings.
