The US Navy first installed artificial intelligence on a warship. System EnterPRESE REMOTE Monit Oring Version 4 (ERM V4) appeared on the destroyer USS Fitzgerald, equipped with controlled missiles.
The new system was introduced as part of the large -scale program of the Pentagon Condition Based Maintenance Plus. According to The War Zone, the military department calculates using machine learning to help crews of ships, coastal services, logistics units and other units support the combat readiness of equipment at the maximum level.
ERM V4 system continuously monitors the state of the case, mechanical and electrical equipment. Every second she processes about 10,000 readings from sensors. Algorithms analyze these data and form recommendations for maintenance.
Artificial intelligence is able to capture barely noticeable patterns and deviations, which may indicate nascent problems. Thanks to this, the crew can eliminate problems even before they develop into serious breakdowns. Such a preemptive approach should minimize the downtime and ensure the constant combat readiness of USS Fitzgerald.
The Navy command has high hopes for ERM V4 in solving long -standing problems with maintenance delays and the readiness of the fleet. It is assumed that the system will not only increase the efficiency of work, but also reduce the repair time, which is especially important for quick response in case of potential conflicts.
Although now ERM V4 is engaged only in maintenance, in the future its functions can also be extended to combat systems. By the end of the year, they plan to integrate the development into the Naval Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (NMRO) system, which is responsible for the repair and modernization of ships.
In 2025, the Navy is going to install ERM V4 on four more ships. This will allow the system to get more data for training, improve algorithms and increase the accuracy of forecasts for maintenance.
II’s implementation for maintenance is part of the US large -scale program to modernize defense systems. Recently, the Office of Promising Research Projects of the Ministry of Defense (DARPA) has launched the Theory of Mind initiative. Within the framework of this project, technologies are developed that will help military leadership better understand potential opponents and interact with them.
The private sector also develops technologies to increase the combat effectiveness of the American army. The company Openai, which created ChatGPT, has combined efforts with the defense company and anduril. Together they work on systems for protecting military facilities and equipment from attacks of seedlings and other air threats.
