Apple Lightning Cable Becomes 90s Game Console

A developer known as “Nyan_satan” has successfully launched the iconic 90s shooter game, DOOM, on an unexpected device – the Apple Lightning adapter with HDMI capabilities. The developer showcased this feat in a video on YouTube, demonstrating how DOOM can be played on the microchip inside the adapter.

Typically used to display iPhone and iPad screens on external monitors, the Lightning Apple adapter features a special chip that compresses and sends video streams through the Lightning interface, decoding them to HDMI standard. In this case, the chip was found to be working on a modified version of iOS, allowing the developer to hack into its defenses and install DOOM for external display through the adapter.

While the demonstration involved a MacBook and an external monitor, the game was actually running on the chip inside the adapter. Playing DOOM on such a device may not be practical, but the achievement itself is remarkable. This experiment goes beyond simple entertainment, showcasing the potential of devices not originally designed for gaming. Previous experiments have seen DOOM run on devices like a pregnancy test, a tractor, and even E. coli.
