Moscow Internet Failure: What Went Wrong?

The largest internet exchange in Russia, located on Butlerova Street in Moscow, experienced a temporary power outage, as reported by the press service of Roskomnadzor to RBC.

Despite the incident, which did not affect the overall node operation significantly, some individual operators may have encountered temporary difficulties in processing internet traffic. The agency assured that there were no major interruptions in the transfer of traffic.

Earlier on January 14, users in Moscow and the Moscow Region reported internet access issues from various providers. Services such as Google, Liveinternet, Wikipedia, Russian Railways, among others, experienced interruptions. The cause of the disruption was linked to a short-term coherence violation, according to Roskomnadzor.

On January 15, a main cable break in Tatarstan led to a decrease in Internet speed in 21 regions of Russia. The damage, identified between Tulyachi and Novy Tur settlements, impacted approximately 3.8 million users in different parts of the country. The incident resulted in degraded internet connection quality and affected the services provided by the affected internet service providers.
