According to reports from various publications, Facebook has started to block posts relating to the Linux operating system. The social network’s administration is cracking down on content containing references to Linux, as well as sites and groups focused on this topic.
The blocking of Linux-related content was first announced on Distrowatch, a popular information resource covering operating systems with open source code. Facebook’s moderation system has classified Facebook Linux as malicious software, with associated groups labeled as a cybersecurity threat.
Reports indicate that content blocking started on January 19, 2024. Users have complained about being unable to share links to Distrowatch. Additionally, some users have had their personal accounts blocked after mentioning Linux in their posts.
Despite efforts by Distrowatch to appeal the decision, Facebook moderators have upheld the decision to keep Linux-related topics in the cybersecurity filter. In a bizarre turn of events, an employee of Distrowatch was also blocked after filing an appeal.
The situation has raised eyebrows as a large part of Facebook’s infrastructure operates on Linux. Furthermore, META regularly posts job openings for developers specializing in Linux.
It is worth noting that META and its products are considered extremist, and their activities are banned in Russia.
