Edge Unveils Scareware Blocker to Combat Scammers

Microsoft introduced a new function for the EDGE browser – Scareware Blocker, designed to combat fraudulent sites. The tool analyzes web pages in real-time and blocks attempts to deceive. The option is already available in preliminary mode and serves as the first line of defense against false warnings about viruses and fraud with technical support.

Fraudulent sites using intimidation tactics create a feeling of urgency and force users to call fake technical support numbers. These sites can suddenly go into full-screen mode, play anxiety-inducing audio messages, or even block the mouse and keyboard to prevent the user from closing the page.

Scareware Blocker utilizes machine training and computer vision to identify the characteristic signs of such attacks. The function works locally without sending data to the cloud. If a site demonstrates signs of fraud, the browser automatically exits full-screen mode, disables sound, and displays a warning with a reduced image of the blocked page. Users can promptly close the site or submit a complaint for Microsoft to swiftly update protective measures.

According to Microsoft, in 2024, EDGE blocked five times more fraudulent sites than three years ago. However, traditional protection systems such as Microsoft Defender Smartscreen mainly block known threats. Scareware Blocker operates directly on the device and prevents deception, even if the malicious site has recently appeared. These attacks are particularly hazardous for older individuals and inexperienced users.

What threats can Scareware Blocker block?

  • Full-screen pages imitating system warnings. These sites masquerade as Windows and display fake errors, prompting users to contact a “specialist”.
  • Automatic playback of alarming audio and video messages. Sites try to create a sense of urgency by claiming the user’s data is at risk.
  • Attempts to block input. Some fraudulent pages hinder keyboard or mouse input, making it challenging to close the tab.
  • Redirection to sites with fake technical
