Google has announced a new feature for Android security called “Identity Check”, which restricts access to settings outside of trusted locations. This feature is part of the Android Theft Protection package, which already includes Theft Detection Lock.
Identity Check enhances device protection against theft by requiring biometric confirmation for certain actions such as resetting settings to factory defaults, changing the lock screen, adding new fingerprints, disabling “Find My Device”, adding a Google account, accessing developer settings, and opening the Google password manager. The feature also offers enhanced protection for Google accounts and enhances security for Samsung accounts on compatible devices.
Initially, Identity Check is only available for Google Pixel smartphones running Android 15 and Samsung Galaxy devices with One UI 7. To enable Identity Check, users need to navigate to Settings – Google – All Services Protection – and toggle the Identity Check switch.
Theft Detection Lock is a system powered by artificial intelligence that detects device theft using sensors, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. For example, if a phone is taken from its owner’s hands, the system locks the screen to safeguard personal data. Previously available only on Google Pixel devices, it now extends to all devices running Android 10 and above. To activate Theft Detection Lock, users can access settings, select their Google account, navigate to the “All Services” section, open “Theft Protection”, and enable the corresponding switch.
Theft Detection Lock functionality can be added through Google Play system updates, even on devices no longer receiving standard security updates. Google also mentioned collaborating with GSMA on developing new anti-theft systems for mobile devices, with more details on progress expected to be revealed in the future.
