The release of the distribution Lightweight Wayland Desktop Environment (LWDE) introduces a pre-designed desktop environment based on the composite server Labwc. This distribution is constructed on the Ubuntu package 24.04 and utilizes its own repository. It may be particularly helpful for enthusiasts looking to create their own desktop environment transitioning from LXDE to Wayland. The distribution environment is built on GTK3 and utilizes the composite server labwc (Lab Wayland Compositor) with functionalities similar to the openbox window manager, sfwbar panels, and spacefm file manager. Featuring a minimal number of packages, recommended applications can be installed during the setup process using the Calamares installer.
The assembly includes the following features:
- Suitable for devices with limited resources (consuming 213 MB of RAM after startup)
- Uses LABWC with a stacking switch supporting pre-examination
- Additional SFWBAR widgets include network monitoring, temperature, and keyboard layout
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings integrated into SFWBAR allow elimination of heavy components such as NetworkManager, Blueman, and Pavucontrol, with settings accessible through corresponding indicators in SFWBAR
- Plugins for implementing a trash bin and a mount interface without using GVFS are added to the Spacefm file manager
- Missing GUI elements are developed in Bash + Yad or GTKDialog, with most elements localized using Gettext
