Czech Firm Compelson Deemed Undesirable by Prosecutor

Prosecutor General of Russia Declares Foreign NGOs as Undesirable

The Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation has officially recognized the activities of the foreign non-governmental organization Compelson S.R.O. from the Czech Republic as undesirable in Russia. Founded in 1993 in Prague, the organization is involved in developing software for data analysis on electronic devices such as mobile phones, smart watches, and cloud storages. Compelson’s products are used by law enforcement agencies and special services from over 160 countries.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, Compelson “supplies special services and law enforcement agencies in different states, including the United States, with software that enables access to information on electronic devices for investigation and analysis.” The organization’s products are utilized for processing data from various sources like mobile phones, smart watches, social networks, and cloud storages, including analyzing files, contacts, messages, call logs, and movements.

Compelson’s flagship product, MobileDit Forensic, is promoted by the company as a tool for fighting crime, gathering evidence, and maintaining law and order. The organization also underscores its mission to create a safer world and protect user confidentiality.

In 2019, Compelson expanded its software offerings to include tools for analyzing data from smart watches, catering to both professional investigative bodies and personal users.

In a separate development, on January 16, the Prosecutor General’s Office also declared the Canadian software developer Opentext Corporation as undesirable in Russia. The organization is alleged to have close ties with US power structures and is accused of supporting an anti-Russia propaganda campaign through information and technical assistance. OpenText Corporation is a contractor of the US Department of Defense, supplying software to the Pentagon for network access control and identification.

Specializing in Enterprise Information Management (EIM) software, OpenText Corporation announced in March 2022 its decision to halt operations in Russia.
