Tor Browser 14.5 Released

Tor Project Announces Release of Tor Browser 14.5

After 6 months of development, the Tor Project has presented a significant release of a specialized browser called Tor Browser 14.5. The browser is based on the ESR-test of Firefox 128 and is focused on providing confidentiality and security by redirecting all traffic only through the Tor network. This prevents direct contact through the standard network connection of the current system, reducing the risk of network system parameter exposure in case of a browser hack. Assemblies for Tor Browser are available for Linux, Android, Windows, and MacOS.

For additional protection, Tor Browser includes the “HTTPS Only” setting to enable traffic encryption on all possible sites. To combat attacks using JavaScript and block plugins, the browser also includes noscript. Additionally, tools like fteproxy and obfs4proxy are included to prevent traffic inspection and censoring. Alternative transports are offered to establish encrypted communication channels, blocking any traffic except HTTP.

To enhance privacy and prevent user tracking, Tor Browser has disabled various APIs including Webgl, Webgl2, Webaudio, Social, SpeechSynthesis, Touch, Audiocontext, HTMLMEDIAELEMENT, Mediastream, Canvas, SharedWorker, Permissions, MediaDevices.enumeratedDevices, Screen.orientation, telemetry sending, Pocket View, HTTP Alternative-Services, MoztCpSocket, and a modified LIBMDNS.

What’s New in the Latest Version:

  • The Android version now includes the Connection Assist interface, previously available only in assemblies for Linux, Windows, and MacOS. This interface automates access adjustment to the Tor network based on user specifics without manual intervention in activating bridge nodes or choosing alternative transport in case of connection issues. This feature was achieved through the implementation of a common backend for both desktop and Android versions. [image]
  • Desktop versions now include a feature to view operation logs reflecting Tor connection activity, errors, and warnings. The log information does not include sensitive data like visited sites but can help diagnose issues. The
