Ixsystems has recently released Truenas 25.04, a distribution that utilizes the Linux kernel and the Debian package base. The move to rename Truenas Core, which was based on FreeBSD and in support mode, to Truenas Scale has paved the way for this new version. The ISO image of Truenas 25.04 is 1.9 GB in size and the initial texts for the assembly, specific to Truenas scenarios , web interfaces , and middleware are available on Github.
Key features of Truenas include the ability to create storage pools across multiple nodes, support for isolated containers, and suitability for building infrastructures . ZFS ( openzfs ) is used as the file system. Other features include support for Docker containers, virtualization using KVM, and scalability for multiple units using applications like minio or syncthing .
Truenas supports various protocols for repository access such as SMB, NFS, iSCSI Block Storage, S3 Object API, and Cloud Sync. Storage can be initially deployed on a single node and expanded horizontally by adding more nodes as needs grow. Apart from storage-related tasks, nodes can also deliver services and run applications in containers orchestrated via Docker or in virtual machines using KVM. Secure access is ensured through VPN (OpenVPN).
Some of the changes in the new version of Truenas 25.04 include:
- Update of the Linux kernel to version 6.12.
- Inclusion of the “Fast_DedUP” mode in Openzfs, speeding up deduplication operations.
- Improved process for expanding RAID-Z
