Arch Linux distributors have made an announcement regarding the replacement of Redis in the “Extra” packets with DD. Redis due to the transition of Redis to a proprietary license. The replacement will be with DBMS Valkey, as part of the Valkey project, which is a fork of Redis continuing to use the BSD license. This project is supported by the Linux Foundation and includes former maintainers of Redis, along with companies like Amazon, Google, Oracle, Ericsson, and Snap. Valkey has already been incorporated instead of Redis in Devil 13, Ubuntu 24.10, Fedora 41, Rhel 10, Azure Linux 3, and Alpine 3.20.
With the release of Redis 7.4, new licenses RSALV2 (Redis Source Available License V2) and SSPLV1 (Server Side Public License V1) have been introduced. These licenses have led to discrimination against certain users, causing limitations on them. RSALV2 allows the use, modification, distribution, and integration of code into applications, except for commercial applications or those providing paid services. On the other hand, SSPLV1, which is based on AGPLV3, also requires sharing the initial texts of all components involved in cloud service provision.
As for Arch Linux, the Redis package will remain in the “Extra” repository for approximately two more weeks before being moved to the Arch User Repository (AUR), maintained by third-party enthusiasts. Once removed from the “Extra” repository, Arch Linux developers do not plan to provide updates for the Redis package in AUR. Users of Arch Linux utilizing the Redis DBMS are advised to switch to the Valkey package promptly.
