Wayland-Protocols 1.44, Weston 14.0.2 Released

Recently, the release of the package Wayland-protocols 1.44 has been published, which contains a set of protocols and extensions that complement the basic protocol of Wayland and provide necessary opportunities for building composite servers and user environments.

In Wayland-Protocols 1.44, a new protocol called Color-Representation-v1 has been proposed to set the color representation of Wayland. This new protocol allows customers to transmit metadata needed to determine transparency, color model, subdiscretization, quantization range, and data conversion from the color model ycbcr to RGB performance.

All protocols go through phases of development, testing, and stabilization. After completing the development stage (under the “unstable” category), the protocol is moved to the “staging” category before being officially included in the set of Wayland-protocols. Protocols in the “Staging” category can already be used in composite servers and customers where their associated functionality is needed.

To speed up the development of protocols and encourage early implementation in projects, an “Experimental” phase was introduced. For a protocol to move to the “Staging” phase, a support team must be formed and a certain number of acknowledgments is required from review participants.

Currently, the Wayland-Protocols set includes the following stable protocols that ensure backward compatibility:

  • viewPorter” – allows the client to perform scaling and cutting edge surfaces on the server side.
