OpenBSD Release 7.7

The OpenBSD project has announced the release of the free Unix-like operating system OpenBSD 7.7. Founded by Theo de Raadt in 1995, the project was born out of a conflict with NetBSD developers which led to the closure of the NETBSD repository to CVS. A feasibility study was conducted with like-minded individuals to create a new open operating system based on the NETBSD starting wood tree, focusing on multiple hardware platforms, standardization, correct functionality, proactive security, and integrated cryptographic agents. The full installation size of the base system OpenBSD 7.7 ISO image is 746 Mb, available for download here.

Aside from the operating system itself, the OpenBSD project is known for its components which have been integrated into other systems, recognized for their security and quality. These components include LibreSSL (a fork of OpenSSL), OpenSSH, the package filter PF, routing daemons OpenOSPFD, NTP server OpenNTPD, mail server OpenSMTPD, GNU Screen, tmux, identd daemon with IDENT protocol implementation, BSD alternative package GNU Groff – mandoc, resilient Carp protocol, lightweight HTTP server, and Openrsync synchronization utility.

Main changes in OpenBSD 7.7:

  • Implementation of the DRM framework synced with Linux 6.12.21 core, adding support for Intel Arrow Lake microarchitecture GPUs in the IntelDRM driver. AMDGPU now supports GPUs Ryzen AI 300 and Radeon RX 9070.
  • ARM64 architecture port now supports SVE
