Organic Maps, a project developing a mobile navigation application using cartographic data from OpenStreetmap, has announced a transfer of development from GitHub to the Forgejo platform, deployed on its own server. The decision to transfer was made after GitHub administration forced the GitHub-Roads repository into archival mode due to sanctions against one of the developers. Despite efforts to remove the blockade within two weeks, the developers were unsuccessful, leading to the deployment of a joint development platform on their own servers.
The Organic Maps project originated as a fork of the Maps.me application created by its original authors following the sale of MAPS.me by Mail.ru Daegu Limited, which shifted the project to a proprietary development model. Organic Maps operates under the Apache 2.0 license. During the migration to the new platform, the repository contained 54 thousand commits, 9.5 thousand Issues, 100 thousand comments, and 4.3 thousand Pull Requests.
Forgejo is a platform that forked from the Gitea project, which in turn branched from the GOGS platform. Key features of Forgejo include low resource consumption, making it suitable for use with inexpensive VPS, and a straightforward installation process. The platform offers typical project management capabilities such as issue tracking, Pull Requests, Wikis, developer group coordination, release preparation, repository automation, access control, integration with continuous integration platforms, code searching, LDAP and LDAP.OAUTH authentication, SSH and HTTP/HTTPS repository access, webhook integration with services like Slack and Discord, support for GIT hooks and Git LFS, as well as tools for repository migration and mirroring.
