WebOS Open Source Edition 2.28 Released
The latest version of WebOS Open Source Edition 2.28 has been released, offering compatibility with various portable devices, boards, and automobile information and entertainment systems. Assemblies for the Raspberry Pi 4 board and virtualbox virtualization systems have been created. The platform is developed in a public repository under the Apache 2.0 license, with community oversight following a joint model development management approach. Changes in this version include transitioning to the Yocto 5.0 platform, updating browser components with Enact, and upgrading the library branch QT to 6.8. More details can be found in the release notes.

WebOS platform, originally designed by Palm in 2008 for smartphones like the Palm Pre and Pixie, has seen various transitions over the years. Acquired by Hewlett-Packard in 2010, it was used in printers, tablets, laptops, and PCs. By 2018, the WebOS Open Source Edition project was launched by LG to return to open development models and expand device support.
WebOS’ systemic environment is built using tools and packages from OpenEmbedded and the Yocto project. Key components include the System and Application Manager (SAM) for executing applications and services, and the Luna Surface Manager (LSM) for forming the user interface. Written in the QT framework and Chromium browser engine, development of user applications is recommended using web technologies like CSS, HTML5, and JavaScript along with the Enact framework.
