GNOME 48 Desktop

After six months of development presented desktop medium GNOME 48. For a quick assessment of the capabilities of GNOME 48 proposed specialized live-based live-based live. openSuse and installation image, prepared as part of the Gnome OS initiative. GNOME 48 is also already included in the experimental assemblies ubuntu 25.04 and fedora 42.

In new issue:

  • Added support of an expanded dynamic brightness range (HDR, High Dynamic Range) and the possibility of withdrawing HDR content to monitors supporting HDR. To turn on HDR support in the configurator in the screen settings, select the “High Dynamic Range” option.
  • In the composite server Mutter added support for triple buffering, allowing for smoother rendering on the screen and animations. With triple buffering, three screen buffers are used to eliminate delays.
  • New windows are now placed by default with alignment in the center of the screen and there is improved positioning of windows in multi-monitor configurations.
  • Implemented a grouped notification list layout to prevent notification clutter, with the ability to view individual notifications by revealing the desired group.
  • A new musical player called Decibels has been introduced with a minimalistic interface optimized for playing sound files, and it is distributed under the AGPLV3 license.
