OpenCloud 1.0 File Sharing Platform Launches

OpenCloud has recently introduced the first release of their platform, which allows users to deploy a system for sharing files and organizing collaborative work on content. This project is positioned as an open alternative to proprietary systems such as Microsoft Sharepoint, Google Drive, and Dropbox, ensuring compliance with GDPR requirements.

OpenCloud is based on the platform ocis (Owncloud Infinite Scale), rewritten from PHP to GO, distinguishing it from the source code base of OwnCloud and its branching project, NextCloud. The focus of OpenCloud is to streamline functionality and prioritize high-quality implementation for collaborative file work.

In addition to file storage, exchange, and synchronized access from multiple devices, OpenCloud offers features for real-time document editing, integration with Collabora Online office suite, Markdown Editor (ToAstui), text extraction from images and scanned documents using OCR, and ICAP protocol for antivirus checks on uploaded files.

Users can manage file visibility, access permissions, and content protection through features such as time limits, password protection, and shared links. Navigation is made easy with tags, filters, and full-text search, while the system maintains a detailed history of file activity and allows for version rollback. Teams can collaborate within dedicated “working spaces.”

Administrators have access to detailed user rights management, supporting role-based access control (RBAC). OpenCloud’s Privacy-First architecture ensures that even administrators cannot access user content. The server side is written in GO, distributed under the Apache 2.0 license, and supports web interfaces like WebDav, GRPC, Microsoft’s Restful Web API Graph, OCS, OCM 1.1, and Openid Connect, implemented as microservices for scalability.

The desktop client, developed in C++ with Qt, is also available for users. For more information, you can visit the OpenCloud platform here.
