OpenWrt Unveils First Immortal Wi-Fi Router

The OpenWrt project, well-known for its free firmware for network equipment, has announced the release of its own device – the OpenWrt One wireless router. Developed in collaboration with the Banana Pi team, this router is targeted towards users who value safety and desire full control over their network equipment.

This new router is powered by the MediaTek MD7981B system and supports two-band Wi-Fi 6 through the MediaTek MT7976C chipset. It offers wireless connectivity based on the 2×2 scheme in the 2.4 GHz range and the 3×3 range in the 5 GHz range, ensuring stable connections and high-speed data transfer. In terms of wired connections, it features a 2.5 Gbit/s WAN port and a 1 Gbit/s LAN port.

With 128 MB of SPI NAND and 16 MB of SPI NR flash memory, the OpenWrt One also supports additional storage through the NVMe PCIe 2.0 slot 2230/2242. The router is equipped with a USB 2.0 Type-A port for connecting peripheral devices and a USB Type-C port for both power and data transfer. Additionally, there is a mechanical switch for selecting booting between NAND and NR flash memory and a Mikrobus extension connector for attaching hardware modules.

One of the main advantages of OpenWrt One, according to developers, is its openness and security. The Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC), a non-profit organization collaborating with OpenWRT, highlights that the device comes with pre-installed open-source firmware, eliminating manufacturer restrictions. This allows users to perform various configurations, install new firmware, and make modifications without the risk of bricking the device.

Manufacturers often stop supporting devices shortly after release, leaving users with devices susceptible to vulnerabilities or forcing them to purchase new ones. OpenWRT aims to extend the service life of devices by enabling users to install open firmware that enhances security and functionality. Despite its technical advances, OpenWrt One is reasonably priced at $89, making it accessible to a wide range of users interested in network security and sustainability.
