Microsoft Edge Drops Manifest V2 Extensions

Following Google, Microsoft also started to forcefully disconnect EDGE extensions based on the outdated API Manifest V2 in its browser. Among them were popular ad blockers that could potentially block advertisements from Google and Bing.

Users who installed the latest EDGE CANARY test build began to receive notifications that some extensions were disabled due to the termination of their support. This process mirrors what Google did in the stable version of Chrome.

These updates sparked discussions among users, with some considering Edge as an alternative to Chrome after their favorite extensions were no longer supported. Now, they are looking for other options.

Some users have expressed willingness to transition to browsers like Firefox or Brave if popular ad blockers like Ublock Origin are affected by the disconnections.

As of now, these changes only impact the EDGE test build. It remains uncertain if they will reach the stable version of the browser soon. However, the overall trend indicates that major web browsers are moving away from Manifest V2 in favor of the new API Manifest V3, which has sparked debates among developers and users alike.

Microsoft officials have not yet provided a statement on these changes. Nonetheless, the company seems to be following Google’s lead in gradually phasing out outdated solutions in favor of more modern standards.
