The Oscar Prize for the best animated full-length film in 2025 has been awarded to the animated film “Flow“, directed by Latvian filmmaker Gints Zilbalodis. The movie follows the adventures of a cat during a flood and is noteworthy for being created on a limited budget using the free modeling system Blender. The production of the film took five and a half years.
In his previous work, the director utilized the MAYA 3D package, but in 2019 he transitioned to Blender with the release of Blender 2.80 Eevee rendering engine. Eevee enabled real-time rendering, facilitating the desired workflow. Speed was a crucial factor in the selection process, not only in rendering but also in file management, lighting setup, and establishing a cohesive style. Blender provided all the necessary tools for the director.
