The American military has initiated a significant experiment on the integration of artificial intelligence into their work processes. The Pentagon has signed a contract with the company Scale AI to implement machine learning technologies in its operations – a first of its kind for the US Department of Defense with the goal of enhancing decision-making with AI.
The project, titled Thunderforge, will involve collaboration with Scale AI, Anduril, and Microsoft Corporation. Anduril will provide the Lattice platform for data management, while Microsoft will introduce LLM models to enable a new operational mechanism.
The Thunderforge initiative aims to integrate AI directly into the operational processes of the US Army, specifically in data planning and analysis. This new system will enable quick processing of large volumes of information, which is vital in modern conflicts where rapid decision-making is crucial.
One interesting aspect of the system is its ability to simulate military scenarios, replacing traditional staff exercises. Artificial intelligence will analyze various action options and suggest optimal decisions for commanders based on the situation. Initial tests of the system are scheduled to be conducted in the Pacific Command of the United States in Hawaii.
Anduril will provide the Lattice platform for data integration and analysis, while Microsoft will implement LLM technology for complex computing processes. The final decisions, however, will remain with military specialists, with AI serving as a support tool.
As discussions around the safety and ethics of using AI in military contexts continue to grow, the Thunderforge project ensures built-in mechanisms for protection and human control. The system will also be linked to credible databases to ensure the use of reliable information. The US Department of Defense recognizes the necessity and inevitability of transitioning to new technologies from traditional planning schemes.
Despite concerns regarding the reliability of LLM technology, the Thunderforge project is viewed as a significant step towards the widespread integration of AI into military operations, promising to revolutionize military strategies and increase efficiency.
