The non-profit organization FreeBSD Foundation has recently announced the release of reports for January regarding the improvement of FreeBSD support for laptops and enhancing user convenience. The initiative aims to adapt FreeBSD to meet the needs of modern laptop users.
Key changes compared to the previous report include:
- Development of the new ACPI_SPMC driver for managing energy consumption, enabling the utilization of low-power modes such as s0ix and s2idle (suspend-to-idle).
- Continued implementation of WiFi 4 (802.11n) and WiFi 5 (802.11ac) specifications, with added support for high-speed data on HT (High Throughput) and VHT (Very High Throughput).
- Integration of the UVC driver (USB Video Class) for USB interface web cameras into the FreeBSD kernel.
- Optimization of the task scheduler for CPUs with heterogeneous cores (combining fast/high-performance and slow/energy-efficient cores).
- Implementation of an experimental patch to support non-standard sound ports.
- Enhancements to the IWX driver prototype for Intel Wi-Fi chips, based on OpenBSD code, supporting 802.11a/b/g and HT (High Throughput) on 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks.
