BlackBerry’s QNX has recently announced that it will be providing its RealTime Micro-core operating system for non-profit purposes. Additionally, they have started working on system images for QNX 8.0 that will be compatible with Raspberry Pi 4 and 5 boards. When asked about the possibility of releasing the source code for the QNX project, a company representative stated that they are moving towards greater openness and transparency, although no specific timeline for such changes has been provided yet.
Back in 2007, there was an initiative to open the source code of QNX under a license that allowed for modifications. At that time, the QNX Neutrino Micro-kernel code was made available to the public. However, in 2010, QNX Software Systems was acquired by Research In Motion (RIM), the company behind the BlackBerry brand, leading to the discontinuation of the code publication. Currently, QNX’s open initiatives are limited to the repository on Gitlab, which includes various ports, frameworks, components for the QNX Hypervisor, and application examples.
