The Managing Council of the Fedora has approved granting the Fedora KDE Desktop Spin the status of the basic version of the distribution, on par with Fedora Workstation in terms of support. With this decision, starting from Fedora 42, the distributions with GNOME and KDE will have equal status and will be treated equally. This means that the Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop Edition will receive similar marketing promotion and will be showcased alongside GNOME on Fedoraproject.org. Serious issues specific to KDE will now be considered release blockers, similar to how serious GNOME issues were treated in the past.
This decision came about after developers working on the Fedora KDE spin presented their case during discussions. After evaluating all factors, the developers concluded that there were no significant reasons to not consider both desktop environments as primary choices. As a result, Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop Edition has agreed to retain its place alongside GNOME and has withdrawn the proposal to replace GNOME with KDE.
