DD_RESCUE 1.99.17: New Utility for Data Recovery

The latest version of DD_RESCUE 1.99.17 has been released, providing utilities to recover data from disk failures, backup and deployment of disk images. It is important to note that this utility should not be confused with the gnu ddrescue, as DD_Rescue offers additional features like support for Sluttered files, input/output cache bypassing, transparent compression, and encryption. DD_RESCUE is a part of many popular GNU/Linux distributions such as Fedora, Opensuse, Mage, and Alt Linux. The utility’s code is written in si language and is distributed under the gplv2+ license.

The new version now includes support for transparent compression and decompression using the LZMA algorithm, enabling users to use disk images compressed in XZ format. Although the LZMA algorithm provides higher compression levels compared to the previous LZO algorithm, it comes at the cost of increased CPU load. The implementation of the LZMA algorithm in DD_RESCUE utilizes the liblzma library, which gained notoriety due to the discovery of a backdoor embedded by an attacker. Dmitry Ivanov from the Higher School of Economics was responsible for preparing the patch to incorporate LZMA support in DD_RESCUE.
